Mary Schoenlein, owner, Mary’s Marvelous!; East Hampton, NY
I was poised to share this on the eve of Hurricane Sandy, but like many, I waited. Thankfully, despite downed trees on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, businesses are open and back to “normal” hours.
I first fell for Mary’s Marvelous! this past summer when I tasted the Chocolate Almond Croissant at her flagship store in Amagansett, NY.
The new location comprises two adjacent storefronts- one featuring baked goods and to-go foods, the other a retail store where Mary’s husband Pat McKibbin gave me a tour not only of Mary’s endless cookies, but the gourmet products she has curated such as Vermont Maple & Sea Salt Quinn Popcorn, Zingerman’s Zzang! bars, and Maya Kaimal Madras Curry.
The highlight of my visit was a savory food baked right in Mary’s kitchen.
If I may take a liberty with a classic song, a good scone is hard to find. You always get another kind. They are usually too dry, too crumbly. Lacking flavor. When I tasted Mary’s Caramelized Onion, Gruyère and Black Pepper Scone, I knew I had finally found a good one.
Caramelized onions can make practically anything more delicious- and in this case their sweet flavor blended ideally with the sweet salty gruyère cheese. Together with flecks of spicy black pepper, they formed a flavorful and firm interior. No crumbling, no dryness.
I highly recommend you try the same.
